In 2019, Arvind Jain was reflecting on his experiences building Rubrik (the multi-billion-dollar cloud data management company he co-founded) and his previous decade as a Distinguished Engineer at Google, where he worked on foundational search infrastructure and YouTube performance. At Rubrik, as the company grew rapidly from a few dozen engineers to over a thousand employees across multiple continents, Jain noticed that employees spent hours every day searching for internal information, pinging colleagues in Slack channels asking 'where is the product roadmap?' or 'who knows the customer history for this account?' Jain realized that modern cloud SaaS adoption had solved application specialization but created catastrophic information silos. Because consumer search technology had advanced so dramatically, employees expected Google-like instant answers at work, yet corporate search tools were primitive keyword-matching utilities that returned hundreds of irrelevant, outdated links. Jain reconnected with former Google and tech colleagues T.R. Vishwanath (an expert in distributed systems and NLP at Facebook and Microsoft), Piyush Prahladka (former Google search infrastructure engineer and Uber senior engineer), and Tony Gentilcore (former Google Chrome rendering engineer and patent holder). Together, they founded Glean in 2019 with a bold mission: build Google for the modern enterprise, unified with generative AI.
