GitLab possesses an unique, modern founding story, devoid of the traditional Silicon Valley garage; it was founded entirely by distributed, open-source collaboration across international borders. The company's foundational origins trace back to 2011 in Ukraine. Dmitriy Zaporozhets, a brilliant software developer, was frustrated by the limitations and high costs of the existing source code management tools he had to use at his day job. He wanted a capable, alternative to GitHub, but he wanted it to be open-source so he could install it on his own company's secure servers. He wrote the foundational code for GitLab and released it as an open-source project. The defining pivot occurred in 2012 when Sid Sijbrandij, a developer living in the Netherlands, discovered the project. He was impressed by the code and recognized its immense commercial potential. He contacted Zaporozhets and, in an unconventional arrangement, founded GitLab.com without ever having met Zaporozhets in person. The company was structurally designed from day one to be 'all-remote' (they famously have no corporate headquarters and their workforce is distributed across dozens of countries). They applied to the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator in 2015, which provided the venture capital required to scale rapidly. Their foundational philosophy was radical transparency (famously publishing their internal employee handbook publicly online). By maintaining a commitment to the open-source community while building lucrative enterprise features on top of that core, Sijbrandij and Zaporozhets transformed an obscure, unpaid weekend coding project from Ukraine into a multi-billion dollar foundational pillar of the modern cloud software industry.
