The origin of GitLab Inc. is not a typical Silicon Valley startup story, but the direct result of a massive, frustrating technical bottleneck experienced by two Ukrainian developers who were attempting to build a better way to manage code for a startup in 2011. Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov were working on a project that required a robust, web-based interface for Git, the distributed version control system created by Linus Torvalds. The company's early growth was fueled by a 'land and expand' strategy, where individual developers and small teams would adopt the free, open-source version of GitLab, and as their projects grew in complexity and their organizations expanded, they would naturally upgrade to the paid, enterprise tiers to access advanced features like CI/CD, security scanning, and premium support.
