Founding Story

Around 2004 Shay Banon, then living in London while his wife studied at Le Cordon Bleu, started writing a recipe search tool for her on top of Apache Lucene. That project became Compass, an open-source search framework. In 2010 he released Elasticsearch, a distributed rewrite designed to scale across many servers. Two years later Banon, Steven Schuurman, Uri Boness and Simon Willnauer founded Elasticsearch BV in Amsterdam to provide commercial support, and the company renamed itself Elastic in 2015.

Background

Software engineer and open-source developer.

Role at Elastic

Shay Banon created the absolute core of the company in 2010 when he wrote Elasticsearch. He originally just wanted to build a simple recipe search engine for his wife, but accidentally created a massively scalable, open-source search and analytics engine that became a foundational tool for the entire tech industry. Shay Banon was born in 1978.

Background

Serial software entrepreneur.

Role at Elastic

Steven Schuurman co-founded Elastic in 2012. As the company's first CEO, he successfully built the commercial business model around Banon's open-source project, scaling the company from a tiny startup into a massively profitable enterprise software provider before stepping down to the board in 2017.

Steven Schuurman was born in 1975.

Teunis Steven Schuurman was born in September 1975. He was Elastic's first chief executive and stepped down in 2017 to concentrate on philanthropy. He also co-founded SpringSource and Atlantis Entertainment and founded the non-profit Dreamery Foundation.

Uri Boness

Co-founder 2012

Background

Search technology expert.

Role at Elastic

Uri Boness co-founded Elastic after working extensively with Shay Banon on search technology. He played a critical role in engineering the early scalability of Elasticsearch, ensuring it could handle the massive data ingestion requirements of enterprise clients. (Exact birth year remains publicly undisclosed).

Simon Willnauer

Co-founder 2012

Background

Core contributor to Apache Lucene.

Role at Elastic

Simon Willnauer co-founded Elastic, bringing his massive technical expertise as a core developer of Apache Lucene (the underlying search library that Elasticsearch is built upon). He architected the complex technical integrations that made Elasticsearch the industry standard. (Exact birth year remains publicly undisclosed).

Who Founded Elastic? FAQ

Who are the four co-founders of Elastic?

Elastic was co-founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Shay Banon, Steven Schuurman, Uri Boness, and Simon Willnauer, uniting software developers and open-source entrepreneurs from Israel, the Netherlands, and Germany.

How did Shay Banon's wife's cooking school inspire the creation of Elasticsearch?

In 2004 in London, Shay Banon wanted to build a desktop recipe search app for his wife who was attending culinary school. Finding existing search tools too complex, he built an open-source search framework called Compass, later rewriting it from scratch in 2010 as Elasticsearch.

What was Simon Willnauer's and Uri Boness's contribution to Elasticsearch?

Simon Willnauer (a core Apache Lucene committer and project management committee member) and Uri Boness joined Shay Banon to optimize Lucene's low-level search indexing algorithms, memory mapping, and distributed clustering performance.

What was Steven Schuurman's role in incorporating Elastic in Amsterdam in 2012?

Steven Schuurman, an experienced open-source executive, convinced Shay Banon, Uri Boness, and Simon Willnauer to unite their respective open-source projects into a formal commercial enterprise, providing early seed capital and serving as founding CEO.

How did Jordan Sissel (Logstash) and Rashid Khan (Kibana) join the Elastic ecosystem?

In 2013, Elastic brought Jordan Sissel (creator of Logstash) and Rashid Khan (creator of Kibana) into the company, uniting the three independent open-source projects into the well-known 'ELK Stack' that conquered the log management world.

How did early venture capital from Benchmark and Index Ventures accelerate Elastic?

In 2012 to 2013, top-tier venture capital firms Benchmark (led by Peter Fenton) and Index Ventures (led by Mike Volpi) invested over $34 million in Series A and Series B rounds, fueling international developer advocacy and cloud infrastructure engineering.

What was the founders' philosophy regarding 'Distributed by Design' remote work?

Because the four founders lived in different cities (Berlin, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv), they established Elastic from day one as a remote-first, globally distributed company without a traditional mandatory headquarters, fostering a global meritocratic engineering culture.

What active roles do the founders hold today at Elastic?

Shay Banon continues to serve as full-time Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors, actively guiding architectural roadmap and open-source strategy, while co-founders remain major shareholders.

Who founded Elastic?

It was founded by Shay Banon, Steven Schuurman, Uri Boness, and Simon Willnauer. Banon is the absolute technical visionary, having written the original open-source code entirely by himself before building a massive commercial entity around it.
