DXC does not have a romantic startup origin story; it was engineered in a corporate boardroom in 2017. Hewlett Packard (HP) had previously bought a large IT consulting company called EDS in 2008 for $13 billion, which turned out to be a large disaster. Desperate to get rid of the struggling services division, HP spun it off and merged it with another large legacy IT company (CSC). They named the new corporate leviathan 'DXC Technology', instantly creating one of the largest IT service providers on earth, but inheriting decades of complex, highly inefficient corporate baggage.

Fletcher Jones co-founded Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in 1959. Recognizing that early computers were useless without custom instructions, he helped create the entire concept of the 'software industry' by providing contract programming for aerospace and defense companies like Honeywell and the US military.

DXC Technology represents the combined heritage of two well-known IT pioneers: Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC, founded in 1959 by Fletcher Jones and Roy Nutt) and Electronic Data Systems (EDS, founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot, which became HPE Enterprise Services).
In April 1959, computer scientists Fletcher Jones and Roy Nutt founded CSC in Los Angeles with just $100 in capital. They wrote early compiler software and the groundbreaking FACT system for Honeywell mainframes, building CSC into the first software company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1968.
In 1962, former IBM salesman H. Ross Perot founded EDS in Dallas, Texas, pioneering the entire IT outsourcing industry. Perot realized that corporations buying expensive IBM mainframes lacked the programming staff to run them, creating long-term facilities management outsourcing contracts.
Following the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, Ross Perot's EDS designed and operated automated claims-processing software for Texas and national healthcare programs, transforming EDS into a national technology leader.
General Motors acquired EDS in 1984 for $2.55 billion (making Ross Perot GM's largest individual shareholder). GM spun off EDS in 1996, and Hewlett-Packard (HP) acquired EDS in 2008 for $13.9 billion to form HP Enterprise Services.
Throughout the 1960s to 2000s, CSC became one of the primary IT contractors for NASA, the Department of Defense, and the FAA, engineering telemetry systems for Apollo moon missions and modernizing global air traffic control networks.
The name 'DXC Technology' stands for 'Digital Experience and Cloud' ('DXC'), chosen in 2017 to signify the newly merged company's mission to guide global enterprises through digital transformation and cloud modernization.
CSC and EDS practically invented the modern independent software and IT services industry, pioneering the concepts of systems integration, data center outsourcing, and enterprise digital engineering that power today's global digital economy.
