Who Founded Google DeepMind?

Demis Hassabis is a British AI researcher and neuroscientist who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and ran it as CEO until August 2026. A former child chess prodigy, he co-designed the game Theme Park at Bullfrog, founded Elixir Studios and then earned a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UCL. Under his leadership DeepMind built DQN, AlphaGo and AlphaFold, was acquired by Google in 2014 and merged with Google Brain in 2023. He shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Jumper for AlphaFold, was knighted in 2024, and on August 5, 2026 became Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs.

Shane Legg is a New Zealand computer scientist and DeepMind co-founder who serves as Chief AGI Scientist. He met Demis Hassabis at UCL's Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, where both were postdoctoral researchers, and the two founded DeepMind with Mustafa Suleyman in 2010. Legg is known for early work on formal definitions of machine intelligence and has long focused on AGI timelines and safety. After the August 2026 reorganization he continues to report to Hassabis.

Mustafa Suleyman is a British entrepreneur who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and led its applied AI work, including the Google data center cooling project and NHS health partnerships. He moved to a Google policy role in 2019, left in 2022 to co-found Inflection AI (maker of the Pi chatbot), and became CEO of Microsoft AI in March 2024, making him a direct competitor to his former lab.
