Founding Story
Dacia began in 1966 when the Romanian state set up the Uzina de Autoturisme Pitești at Colibași (now Mioveni) and licensed Renault designs; the Dacia 1300, based on the Renault 12, followed in 1969 and stayed in production until 2004. After communism ended, the plant fell behind technologically. In 1999 Renault, then led by Louis Schweitzer, bought a majority stake with the goal of building a modern car for around €5,000. Engineer Gérard Detourbet led the project that produced the 2004 Logan, which proved popular in Western Europe as well as emerging markets.

Nicolae Ceaușescu led Communist Romania from 1965 to 1989. Dacia was created in 1966 under his government as a state-owned car plant at Colibași (now Mioveni), built under a licensing deal with Renault so that Romania could produce its own family cars. The Dacia 1300, launched in 1969, became the country's national car. Dacia was a state enterprise rather than a privately founded company, and his regime was authoritarian.
