Founding Story

The storied heritage of Chubb began in 1882 in the bustling seaport district of lower Manhattan. Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy Chubb recognized that merchant shipowners and cargo traders required reliable, claims-paying marine insurance to support America's expanding export economy. Starting with $140,000 in capital collected from 100 prominent merchants, Chubb & Son earned an immediate reputation for rapid, fair claims settlement without bureaucratic delays. Over the early 20th century, Chubb expanded from marine hulls into automobile coverage, fine art, and commercial property. In the 1960s, Chubb revolutionized personal insurance by introducing 'Masterpiece'—a bespoke, high-limit homeowners and liability package tailored specifically for affluent families with historic estates, jewelry, and private art collections. Meanwhile, in 1985, an elite international consortium formed ACE Limited in Bermuda to provide catastrophic excess liability coverage during a severe US insurance capacity crisis. Under Evan Greenberg's leadership from 2004 onward, ACE transformed into an international commercial powerhouse, culminating in the historic January 2016 acquisition of Chubb for $28.3 billion, adopting the Chubb name while embedding ACE's global reach.
