Ather Energy (Ather Energy Private Limited) is the intellectual pioneer and architectural foundation of India's electric mobility revolution. Founded in October 2013 by two passionate engineering graduates from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras—Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain—Ather was born out of an audacious mission: to prove that India could build a world-class electric vehicle with proprietary domestic engineering, rather than assembling cheap imported components. Supported by an initial incubation grant from their alma mater's engineering lab and early angel investment from Flipkart co-founders Sachin and Binny Bansal, the founders spent five grueling years engineering every component from scratch: designing a die-cast aluminum chassis, high-torque PMSM electric motor, and intelligent water-resistant battery pack. In 2018, Ather launched the landmark Ather 450, introducing touchscreens, Google Maps navigation, and over-the-air performance updates to two-wheelers for the first time in Indian history. Today, valued at $1.3 billion with backing from automotive colossus Hero MotoCorp, Ather operates high-tech automated factories in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, delivering the performance 450X and family-focused Rizta to hundreds of thousands of riders nationwide while powering the country's most reliable public fast-charging grid.
Ather operates a vertically integrated hardware and software clean mobility business model: earning retail revenue from consumer electric scooter sales (Ather 450S, 450X, 450 Apex, and the family scooter Ather Rizta), recurring subscription revenue from connected software telematics ('Ather Connect' for navigation, anti-theft, and OTA features), battery warranty extension plans ('Ather Battery Protect'), merchandise and accessory sales, and public fast-charging fees across the Ather Grid network.
Ather navigates raw material price volatility for lithium-ion battery cells (NMC and LFP chemistry), policy adjustments in government EV subsidies (FAME-II and EMPS schemes in India), and intense market competition from Ola Electric, TVS Motor Company (iQube), and Bajaj Auto (Chetak).
Tarun Mehta currently leads Ather Energy, overseeing strategic vision, balance sheet health, and organizational execution in Electric Vehicles (EV), Smart Two-Wheelers, Fast-Charging Infrastructure, Battery Technology & Clean Mobility.
Under executive direction, Ather Energy is prioritizing workflow automation alongside disciplined capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.
Leadership at Ather Energy has historically navigated industry cycles by restructuring operational priorities and expanding competitive moats.
