Founding Story

ADP's story began in 1949 in Paterson, New Jersey, when 22-year-old Henry Taub observed local factory managers struggling with the tedious, error-prone weekly task of calculating worker hours, withholding taxes, and stuffing cash envelopes. Partnering with his brother Joe Taub and childhood friend Frank Lautenberg (who later served as ADP CEO and long-time US Senator), Henry founded Automatic Payrolls, Inc. Operating out of a small rented office, the founders manually picked up timecards from local textile mills, calculated net pay on mechanical Burroughs adding machines, and delivered physical payroll envelopes back to employers before payday. In 1957, ADP made an audacious technological leap, investing in mainframe computers and punch-card tabulating machinery. Reincorporating as Automatic Data Processing, Inc. in 1961, ADP completed its public listing on the American Stock Exchange. In the 1970s and 1980s, under Frank Lautenberg's visionary commercial leadership, ADP expanded nationwide by acquiring dozens of regional data processing bureaus and pioneering electronic funds transfer. As personal computers and internet networking emerged, ADP systematically transformed its mainframe operations into web-based portals, and subsequently into multi-tenant cloud platforms, solidifying its place as the definitive global payroll powerhouse.
