Financial summary

IBM

IBM's reported revenue fell from about $80 billion in 2016-2018 to $57.4 billion in 2021, mostly because the Kyndryl spin-off and earlier divestitures removed low-margin services. Since then the slimmer company has grown each year: $60.5 billion in 2022, $61.9 billion in 2023, $62.8 billion in 2024, and $67.5 billion in 2025 (up 7.6%). FY2025 net income from continuing operations was $10.6 billion and free cash flow was $14.7 billion. In Q2 2026, revenue rose 1% to $17.16 billion: software grew 5% to $7.76 billion, consulting was flat at $5.33 billion, and infrastructure fell 7% to $3.84 billion as IBM Z sales lapped the z17 launch. Some large software deals slipped out of the quarter, so IBM cut its 2026 constant-currency revenue growth forecast to 4-5% while keeping its target of about $1 billion more free cash flow than in 2025.

Target

Target's revenue fell three years in a row, from $109.1 billion in fiscal 2022 to $104.8 billion in fiscal 2025, while FY2025 net income was $3.705 billion. Fiscal 2026 has reversed the trend so far. Q2 FY2026 net sales rose 5.3% to $26.5 billion, comparable sales grew 3.8% on a 3.6% traffic gain, and digital comparable sales rose 8.7% with same-day delivery up more than 25%. Q2 GAAP EPS was $4.11 versus $2.05 a year earlier, but $1.65 of that came from $994 million of pretax tariff refunds; excluding refunds, EPS grew about 20%. Management now guides to roughly 5% net sales growth for fiscal 2026 and EPS of $9.90 to $10.90.

Business model and strategy

IBM

How it makes money

IBM makes money from four segments. Software ($29.96 billion in FY2025, about 44% of revenue) includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift, HashiCorp Terraform and Vault, Confluent data streaming (from March 2026), watsonx AI, automation, security, and mainframe transaction-processing software, sold mostly as subscriptions and recurring licenses.

Growth strategy

IBM does not try to beat AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud at selling public cloud capacity. It sells the software layer that runs across all of them and across on-premises data centers.

Competitive advantage

IBM's main advantage is how deeply it is built into the core systems of large regulated organizations. Banks, card networks, insurers, and governments run high-volume transaction processing on IBM Z, and moving those workloads is slow, risky, and expensive.

Target

How it makes money

Target runs a general-merchandise, big-box retail model that pairs low-margin essentials (groceries, household basics) to drive store traffic with higher-margin discretionary categories (apparel, home decor, and private-label brands) to drive profit -- the classic 'basket size' strategy.

Growth strategy

Target is focusing on merchandising authority, guest experience, technology acceleration, team and community strength, stores-as-hubs, same-day fulfillment, retail media and owned-brand renewal.

Competitive advantage

Target's advantage is the mix of curated merchandise, owned brands, convenient stores, same-day fulfillment and a brand position between discount utility and design-led retail.
