NextEra Energy possesses a historic, foundational founding story, rooted entirely in the speculative real estate explosion of 1920s Florida and defined by an ambitious corporate roll-up of fragmented local power grids. The original corporate entity (Florida Power & Light) was incorporated in 1925. However it was not founded by local Florida businessmen; it was an aggressive, corporate project orchestrated by the American Power & Light Company (an utility holding company heavily controlled by the legendary Electric Bond and Share Company, EBASCO, in New York). During the 1920s Florida was experiencing a historically unprecedented land boom. However, the electrical infrastructure was a chaotic, unreliable disaster. Dozens of isolated, underfunded local municipalities operated primitive power plants (often running only a few hours a day and constantly shutting down when the ice plants drew too much power). The foundational masterstroke of FPL was executing an aggressive roll-up strategy. With Wall Street backing, FPL bought up 58 fragmented, independent local power and ice companies across Florida. They built centralized power plants and strung hundreds of miles of robust transmission lines, unifying the chaotic grid. By bringing reliable, scaled industrial electricity to an untamed, humid state, the original founders laid the foundational infrastructure that allowed Florida to transform into a modern economic powerhouse.
