Mistral AI is Europe's most valuable AI company. It started as a model lab known for releasing open weights through BitTorrent links and has become a full-stack provider that offers models, an assistant (Vibe), developer tools and its own compute. Its pitch to customers is control: models they can inspect, fine-tune and run on their own servers or on European infrastructure. The company is headquartered in Paris, France.
Mistral makes money in four ways. It charges per token for API access to its models on La Plateforme; it sells enterprise licences and custom deployments, often on-premise or in private clouds, to companies and governments that want control over their data; it earns through cloud marketplaces such as Microsoft Foundry, AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI; and it sells consumer and business subscriptions to its Vibe assistant (Pro was launched at $14.99 a month). Since 2025 it also rents out GPU capacity through Mistral Compute, which the Koyeb acquisition was meant to strengthen. Open-weight releases act as the top of the funnel for paid products.
