In 2000, J.P. Morgan executive Richard McVey identified a vast market inefficiency: while equity markets had gone electronic, the multi-trillion-dollar corporate bond market still relied on manual telephone calls and fax machines. Backed by J.P. Morgan's incubator, McVey spun out MarketAxess to establish an independent electronic trading platform for corporate credit.
MarketAxess operates a transaction-volume and software technology business model. It earns variable transaction commissions charged per million dollars of bonds traded across its electronic platform, with fee rates determined by the credit quality, maturity, and liquidity tier of the underlying bond instrument. In all-to-all Open Trading transactions, MarketAxess earns fees from both the buyer and seller, capturing superior transaction revenue per million. Complementing its trading commissions, MarketAxess generates high-margin recurring revenue through proprietary credit data products (Composite+ pricing algorithm), regulatory reporting services, and post-trade automation tools, maintaining operating margins above 45%.
Executive Leadership
Finance & Operations
MarketAxess operates in an intensely competitive credit market where Tradeweb and Bloomberg are aggressively investing to expand their corporate bond market share. In addition, periods of low corporate bond issuance or tight credit spreads can dampen secondary market trading velocity. Adapting to algorithmic portfolio trading protocols and expanding into foreign exchange and rates represents an ongoing strategic focus.
