· Founded 2014 · Paris, Île-de-France, France
In 2014, the cryptocurrency world was in the depths of a traumatic winter following the catastrophic collapse of Mt. Gox, which lost 850,000 Bitcoins to theft. In Paris, two independent entrepreneurial groups crossed paths: La Maison du Bitcoin (France's first Bitcoin hub founded by serial entrepreneur Éric Larchevêque and digital media executive Pascal Gauthier) and a team of brilliant smartcard engineers led by Nicolas Bacca (founder of BTChip). Bacca had spent over a decade writing cryptographic security software for Gemalto and banking smartcards. Recognizing that their skills were perfectly complementary—Larchevêque and Gauthier possessed commercial execution and venture scaling prowess, while Bacca held genius-level embedded hardware cryptography expertise—the teams merged in late 2014 to incorporate Ledger. Working out of a modest facility in Vierzon, a historic manufacturing town in central France, Ledger engineered the world's first hardware wallet powered by an EAL5+ Secure Element chip. In 2016, Ledger released the legendary **Ledger Nano S**—a sleek, USB-stick form factor device featuring a stainless steel swivel cover, a monochrome OLED screen, and physical confirmation buttons. Priced accessibly at under $70, the Nano S became the best-selling hardware cryptocurrency wallet in history, selling over 4.5 million units and cementing Ledger's position as the global champion of cold storage security.
Ledger was founded in 2014 by Pascal Gauthier, Éric Larchevêque, Nicolas Bacca, Joël Pobeda in Paris, Île-de-France, France.
The founders established Ledger with the objective of solving core inefficiencies in Hardware Security, Cryptocurrency Cold Storage, Embedded Operating Systems, Web3 Wallets & Cybersecurity, laying the foundation for its current global scale.
Even as Ledger scales to $210M, the organization maintains the founders' commitment to innovation and customer-centric execution.
