Founding Story

In 1984, brothers Steven M. Rales and Mitchell P. Rales acquired control of DMG, Inc., a former Massachusetts real estate investment trust, and restructured it into Danaher Corporation, adopting the name of Danaher Creek in Western Montana where they had camped and fished while brainstorming their corporate vision. Initially acquiring industrial manufacturing assets such as Jacobs Vehicle Systems (Jake Brake) and Matco Tools, the Rales brothers embraced lean manufacturing in 1988 after visiting Japan to learn from former Toyota engineers at Shingijutsu. They synthesized these methods into the Danaher Business System (DBS). Over the ensuing decades, Danaher expanded via hundreds of disciplined acquisitions, consistently upgrading its portfolio from cyclical industrial machinery to high-margin, life-saving life sciences and medical diagnostics technologies.
