Founding Story

The origins of Confluent trace back to 2010 inside LinkedIn's engineering headquarters in Mountain View, California. At the time, LinkedIn's hyper-growth was overwhelming its relational databases, leading to fragile point-to-point data pipelines between search systems, recommendation engines, and analytical databases. Infrastructure engineers Jay Kreps, Jun Rao, and Neha Narkhede realized that the company needed a completely new type of infrastructure: a unified, fault-tolerant, high-throughput distributed commit log capable of processing hundreds of billions of real-time messages daily. They named their creation Apache Kafka (in honor of author Franz Kafka, reflecting a system optimized for writing). In 2011, LinkedIn open-sourced Kafka under the Apache Software Foundation. Kafka achieved historic open-source adoption, rapidly spreading across the Fortune 500. In September 2014, recognizing that enterprises across every sector desperately needed an enterprise-grade platform to operationalize Kafka without managing massive distributed cluster complexity, Kreps, Rao, and Narkhede founded Confluent with $6.9 million in Series A funding from Benchmark. In 2017, Confluent launched Confluent Cloud, completely re-architecting Kafka for multi-tenant cloud elasticity with its proprietary Kora engine. In June 2021, Confluent completed its Initial Public Offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange under ticker symbol 'CFLT', raising $828 million at an $11 billion valuation.
