Alcon stands as the undisputed global authority in human vision restoration and eye health. Across the world, cataracts represent the leading cause of blindness; Alcon's surgical equipment and advanced intraocular lenses are used in more than 80% of all cataract surgeries performed globally. Its Centurion vision systems and AcrySof/Clareon intraocular lenses allow ophthalmic surgeons to remove cloudy natural lenses and insert precision biomaterial optics that permanently restore crystal-clear vision. In Vision Care, Alcon revolutionized the contact lens industry by inventing "water gradient" silicone hydrogel materials that approach 100% water content at the outer surface, delivering all-day comfort for contact lens wearers. Operating with gross margins above 56% and strong free cash flow, Alcon benefits from the secular aging of the global population and soaring digital screen time.
Alcon generates revenue through a classic medical device "razor-and-blade" model across its Surgical and Vision Care businesses. In Surgical, Alcon sells capital equipment consoles (such as Centurion phacoemulsification systems and LuxOR surgical microscopes) to ophthalmic surgery centers and hospitals. Once a console is installed, surgeons must purchase high-margin, single-use proprietary consumables (tubing packs, specialized surgical knives, viscoelastic fluids) and intraocular lenses (such as Clareon and PanOptix trifocal IOLs) for every individual patient procedure performed, generating recurring high-margin cash flow. In Vision Care, Alcon generates recurring consumer revenue through daily disposable contact lenses and over-the-counter dry eye drops (Systane) purchased regularly by millions of consumers worldwide.
