Founding Story
John M. Green was a prominent Atlanta merchant, industrialist, and civic financier who served as the inaugural president of Commercial Travelers' Savings Bank upon its chartering in September 1891. Working alongside visionary Atlanta entrepreneur Joel Hurt, Green structured the institution to provide secure savings repositories and commercial credit to traveling salesmen, wholesale merchants, and regional railroad suppliers rebuilding Atlanta's commercial core. In 1893, Green oversaw the institution's strategic transition into a state-chartered trust institution, creating the Trust Company of Georgia, which evolved over the following century into SunTrust Banks, Inc.
