Background
John Bissell possessed a deeply entrenched, highly specialized background in international development, textile merchandising, and global supply chain logistics. Operating initially as a buyer for Macy's in New York and subsequently advising the Ford Foundation, this incredibly rigorous background in retail curation and institutional development provided the exact operational blueprint required to successfully organize highly fragmented rural Indian weaving communities.
Founding Story
John Bissell was a highly visionary American entrepreneur and the legendary founder of Fabindia, one of India's most iconic retail brands. Originally from Connecticut, Bissell arrived in India in 1958 on a Ford Foundation grant to advise the Indian government on cottage industries. Deeply captivated by the massive skill and cultural heritage of Indian artisans, he founded Fabindia in 1960. Operating initially as a highly focused export house, Bissell connected rural weavers directly to international markets, entirely bypassing exploitative middlemen. In 1975, he boldly opened the first domestic Fabindia store in New Delhi, completely transforming traditional Indian textiles into a massive, highly sought-after lifestyle brand. Under his deeply ethical leadership, Fabindia established a highly sustainable commercial model that empowered hundreds of thousands of rural artisans.
