Founding Story

James Jerome Hill (1838–1916), celebrated across American economic history as 'The Empire Builder,' was the railroad industrialist who developed the Great Northern Railway. Hill recognized that transcontinental railroad expansion across the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest required sophisticated regional financial institutions capable of financing international grain shipments, lumber mills, and municipal infrastructure. Hill became a major equity investor and director of the First National Bank of Minneapolis in 1882, infusing the bank with substantial capital and embedding a culture of strict fiscal conservatism and infrastructure-focused credit underwriting that anchored First Bank System.
