Frederick W. Smith

Frederick Wallace Smith was born in 1944 in Marks, Mississippi. He attended the Memphis University School before enrolling at Yale University, where he developed the academic framework for the Federal Express concept. After Yale, he served two tours in Vietnam as a Marine Corps officer, completing his service as a captain. His military background in logistics and operations planning directly influenced the hub-and-spoke model he would later apply to commercial air cargo. Following military service, he acquired and operated Arkansas Aviation Sales before founding Federal Express Corporation in 1971. Smith served as FedEx's chairman and CEO from the company's founding until June 2022, when he transitioned to executive chairman and was succeeded by Raj Subramaniam as CEO.
