Founding Story

Alpheus Branch (1843–1893) was an American merchant, agricultural financier, and civic leader who co-founded Branch and Hadley in Wilson, North Carolina, in 1872, establishing the direct legal origin of Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB&T). Born into a prominent Halifax County family and educated at Trinity College, Branch recognized that post-Civil War North Carolina farmers desperately required accessible, honest agricultural credit rather than predatory merchant scrip. Branch instituted a customer-first relationship banking philosophy that allowed local farmers to finance crop supplies at fair rates and store harvests securely. In 1887, Branch bought out his partner Thomas Jefferson Hadley, obtaining a state legislative bank charter in 1889 that laid the institutional foundation for BB&T's multi-century expansion across the American Southeast.
