Business model and strategy
Snyk
How it makes money
Snyk sells subscription software (SaaS). A free tier for individual developers and open-source projects drives bottom-up adoption; paid Team and Enterprise plans are priced mainly by the number of contributing developers and the products used.
Growth strategy
Snyk is repositioning around securing AI-driven software development. It bought Zurich-based Invariant Labs in June 2025 to research threats to AI agents, such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) vulnerabilities and tool poisoning, and is building an AI-native security platform alongside its existing scanners.
Competitive advantage
Snyk's edge rests on developer adoption and workflow placement. Its tools run where developers already work (VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, CI pipelines), open fix pull requests instead of only reporting issues, and draw on a vulnerability database curated by Snyk's own security research team. Being independent of any single code host or cloud lets it serve enterprises that use several of them.
Vanta
How it makes money
Vanta sells annual software subscriptions. Price depends on company size, the number of compliance frameworks a customer needs and which modules it adds, such as Trust Center, questionnaire automation and vendor risk management. Vanta does not publish a price list; deals are quoted by sales.
Growth strategy
Vanta grows by selling more frameworks and modules to existing customers, moving upmarket into larger companies, and adding products around the audit itself: Trust Center, security questionnaire automation, vendor risk management and AI agents. It has also bought small companies (Trustpage in 2023, Riskey in 2025) to fill product gaps.
Competitive advantage
Vanta has the largest disclosed customer base among compliance automation vendors it competes with (16,000+ organizations in April 2026), 400+ integrations feeding its controls tests, and a product line that now covers trust centers, questionnaires and vendor risk as well as audits.
