Business model and strategy
Printful
How it makes money
Printful earns money on each item it produces. A seller connects a store on Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, Wix, WooCommerce or another platform, uploads designs and sets retail prices. When an end customer orders, the order flows to Printful, which charges the seller a base product price plus shipping, prints or embroiders the item in one of its fulfillment centers, and ships it under the seller's brand.
Growth strategy
Printful grows by adding sales-channel integrations, widening its catalog, and courting enterprise brands; enterprise customers grew 115% in 2021, with partners including Coca-Cola, MTV and Comedy Central. It bought merchandise specialist Snow Commerce in 2023, and the Printify merger in 2024 added a marketplace-style provider network.
Competitive advantage
Printful controls production in its own facilities in Charlotte, Dallas, Toronto, Tijuana, Barcelona, Riga and Birmingham (UK), which gives it more consistent quality and branding options than marketplaces that route orders to independent print shops. By the end of 2021 it had invested $83.8 million in printing equipment and technology.
Printify
How it makes money
Printify runs an asset-light marketplace. Merchants pick a blank product from a catalog of 900+ items, add a design and publish it to their store. When a shopper buys, the merchant pays Printify the product base price plus shipping, and Printify sends the order to a print provider in its network.
Growth strategy
Printify grows by adding sales channels (Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, eBay, TikTok Shop and others), widening its catalog and provider network, and selling Premium and Enterprise plans to high-volume sellers. Its quality programme relies on provider ratings and automated order routing, including Printify Choice, which selects a provider for the merchant.
Competitive advantage
Printify's edge is choice and price. Because it does not own factories, it can list several providers for the same product and let merchants compare base price, location, production time and ratings. That model supports one of the widest catalogs in print-on-demand and typically lower base costs than vertically integrated rivals.
