Financial summary
Midjourney
Midjourney is private and does not release revenue, profit or subscriber counts. Holz said in 2022 that the company was already profitable. Third-party trackers estimate revenue of about $50 million in 2022, about $200 million in 2023 and roughly $300 million in 2024; some 2025-2026 analyses cite figures near $500 million, but none of these numbers is audited or confirmed by the company. Midjourney has raised no outside equity, so there is no priced funding round and no official valuation.
Runway
Runway is private and does not publish audited financials. Germanidis said annual recurring revenue reached $200 million in September 2026, double the roughly $100 million reported in April 2026. Sacra estimates 2024 recognized revenue at about $44 million with a $155 million EBITDA loss, reflecting heavy GPU spending. Funding has scaled with the business: a $141M Series C extension at $1.5B in 2023, a $308M Series D at just over $3B in April 2025, and a $315M Series E at $5.3B in February 2026, plus a compute capacity deal with CoreWeave.

Business model and strategy
Midjourney
How it makes money
Midjourney sells subscriptions. Plans are Basic ($10/month), Standard ($30), Pro ($60) and Mega ($120), with discounts for annual billing. Each tier buys a monthly allotment of Fast GPU time; Standard and above add unlimited Relax-mode image generation, and Pro and Mega add Stealth Mode so creations stay out of the public gallery. Extra Fast hours can be bought on demand.
Growth strategy
Growth comes from regular model releases (V7 in April 2025, Video V1 in June 2025, Niji 7 in January 2026, V8 alpha in March 2026, V8.2 in July 2026), a web app that removed the need for Discord, and licensing: in August 2025 Meta announced it would license Midjourney's image and video technology. Holz has said the long-term goal is real-time open-world simulation.
Competitive advantage
Midjourney's edge is aesthetic quality and a loyal creative user base. Its models are tuned on user ratings and personalization profiles, which helps them produce stylized, cinematic images that many illustrators and concept artists prefer. Because it carries no investor obligations, it can release models on its own schedule and keep a small, research-led team.
Runway
How it makes money
Runway makes money in four ways. First, self-serve subscriptions: creators pay monthly or annual plans that include generation credits, with a free tier for trials. Second, enterprise plans priced per seat, sold to studios, agencies and brands that need team controls and security. Third, the developer API (Runway Dev), billed by usage, which lets other software products call Runway's video models.
Growth strategy
Runway's growth plan has three parts: keep its video models at the top of public benchmarks, sell more to large enterprises (Germanidis says Runway serves 95% of the Fortune 100), and extend world models from media into gaming, robotics and simulation. It also adds talent through team hires such as Kinetix and partnerships such as the NVIDIA-backed Cosmos Coalition.
Competitive advantage
Runway has worked on generative media since 2018 and co-authored the 2021 latent diffusion paper behind Stable Diffusion. Its Gen-4.5 model ranked first on the Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard in late 2025, ahead of offerings from Google and OpenAI. Valenzuela told CNBC in May 2026 that Runway out-competed trillion-dollar companies with a team of about 100 people.
