Financial summary

IBM

IBM's reported revenue fell from about $80 billion in 2016-2018 to $57.4 billion in 2021, mostly because the Kyndryl spin-off and earlier divestitures removed low-margin services. Since then the slimmer company has grown each year: $60.5 billion in 2022, $61.9 billion in 2023, $62.8 billion in 2024, and $67.5 billion in 2025 (up 7.6%). FY2025 net income from continuing operations was $10.6 billion and free cash flow was $14.7 billion. In Q2 2026, revenue rose 1% to $17.16 billion: software grew 5% to $7.76 billion, consulting was flat at $5.33 billion, and infrastructure fell 7% to $3.84 billion as IBM Z sales lapped the z17 launch. Some large software deals slipped out of the quarter, so IBM cut its 2026 constant-currency revenue growth forecast to 4-5% while keeping its target of about $1 billion more free cash flow than in 2025.

Wipro

In FY2026 Wipro reported gross revenue of Rs 926.2 billion and net income of Rs 132.0 billion. IT services revenue was about $10.48 billion, roughly level with the year before, and the IT services operating margin was 17.2%. Fourth-quarter gross revenue was Rs 242.4 billion, up 7.7% year over year, and quarterly net income was Rs 35.0 billion, down 1.9%. With the Q4 results in April 2026, the board approved a Rs 150 billion share buyback. In Q1 FY2027, gross revenue rose 10.6% year over year to Rs 244.8 billion. IT services revenue fell 1.4% sequentially to $2,614.5 million, and net income was Rs 33.6 billion ($354.6 million), up 0.6% year over year.

Business model and strategy

IBM

How it makes money

IBM makes money from four segments. Software ($29.96 billion in FY2025, about 44% of revenue) includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift, HashiCorp Terraform and Vault, Confluent data streaming (from March 2026), watsonx AI, automation, security, and mainframe transaction-processing software, sold mostly as subscriptions and recurring licenses.

Growth strategy

IBM does not try to beat AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud at selling public cloud capacity. It sells the software layer that runs across all of them and across on-premises data centers.

Competitive advantage

IBM's main advantage is how deeply it is built into the core systems of large regulated organizations. Banks, card networks, insurers, and governments run high-volume transaction processing on IBM Z, and moving those workloads is slow, risky, and expensive.

IBM business model in full

Wipro

How it makes money

Wipro earns most of its revenue from its IT services segment: multi-year contracts to build, run, and modernize enterprise software and infrastructure, plus consulting, cloud migration, cybersecurity, engineering services, and business process work. Contracts are priced as time-and-materials, fixed-price, or managed-service deals.

Growth strategy

Under Srini Pallia, Wipro is focusing on large deals, consulting-led selling, AI-enabled delivery through its ai360 program, and growth in its biggest client accounts. In 2025 it agreed to acquire Harman's Digital Transformation Solutions unit to add engineering services capacity.

Competitive advantage

Wipro's strengths are long-standing client relationships, a large India delivery base, engineering services depth, Capco's position in financial services consulting, a net cash balance sheet, and stable Premji family control.
