Financial summary
IBM
IBM's reported revenue fell from about $80 billion in 2016-2018 to $57.4 billion in 2021, mostly because the Kyndryl spin-off and earlier divestitures removed low-margin services. Since then the slimmer company has grown each year: $60.5 billion in 2022, $61.9 billion in 2023, $62.8 billion in 2024, and $67.5 billion in 2025 (up 7.6%). FY2025 net income from continuing operations was $10.6 billion and free cash flow was $14.7 billion. In Q2 2026, revenue rose 1% to $17.16 billion: software grew 5% to $7.76 billion, consulting was flat at $5.33 billion, and infrastructure fell 7% to $3.84 billion as IBM Z sales lapped the z17 launch. Some large software deals slipped out of the quarter, so IBM cut its 2026 constant-currency revenue growth forecast to 4-5% while keeping its target of about $1 billion more free cash flow than in 2025.
TCS
TCS reported FY2026 revenue of ₹2,67,021 crore ($30.017 billion), up 4.6% in rupees but down about 0.5% in dollars, with net income of about $5.71 billion (₹49,210 crore) and a 19.8% net margin. Q1 FY2027 revenue was ₹72,275 crore ($7.624 billion), up 13.9% in rupees and 2.7% in dollars year over year, with an operating margin of about 24% and net profit of ~$1.55 billion (₹13,349 crore). The growth story now rests on AI: TCS put its annualized AI services revenue at $1.8 billion in Q3 FY2026 and $2.6 billion in Q1 FY2027, while total contract value held at $9.5 billion for the quarter.

Business model and strategy
IBM
How it makes money
IBM makes money from four segments. Software ($29.96 billion in FY2025, about 44% of revenue) includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift, HashiCorp Terraform and Vault, Confluent data streaming (from March 2026), watsonx AI, automation, security, and mainframe transaction-processing software, sold mostly as subscriptions and recurring licenses.
Growth strategy
IBM does not try to beat AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud at selling public cloud capacity. It sells the software layer that runs across all of them and across on-premises data centers.
Competitive advantage
IBM's main advantage is how deeply it is built into the core systems of large regulated organizations. Banks, card networks, insurers, and governments run high-volume transaction processing on IBM Z, and moving those workloads is slow, risky, and expensive.
TCS
How it makes money
TCS earns revenue through global IT services and consulting, built around eight industry verticals and geographic diversification.
Growth strategy
TCS is growing through AI, cloud modernization, cybersecurity, data, engineering services, platforms, large transformation deals, partnerships and deeper penetration of existing enterprise accounts.
Competitive advantage
TCS' advantage is delivery scale, Tata trust, large-account depth, industry domain expertise, training infrastructure, strong margins and a reputation for mission-critical execution.
