Financial summary
IBM
IBM's reported revenue fell from about $80 billion in 2016-2018 to $57.4 billion in 2021, mostly because the Kyndryl spin-off and earlier divestitures removed low-margin services. Since then the slimmer company has grown each year: $60.5 billion in 2022, $61.9 billion in 2023, $62.8 billion in 2024, and $67.5 billion in 2025 (up 7.6%). FY2025 net income from continuing operations was $10.6 billion and free cash flow was $14.7 billion. In Q2 2026, revenue rose 1% to $17.16 billion: software grew 5% to $7.76 billion, consulting was flat at $5.33 billion, and infrastructure fell 7% to $3.84 billion as IBM Z sales lapped the z17 launch. Some large software deals slipped out of the quarter, so IBM cut its 2026 constant-currency revenue growth forecast to 4-5% while keeping its target of about $1 billion more free cash flow than in 2025.
JPMorgan Chase
JPMorgan's revenue grew from $128.7 billion in FY2022 to $158.1 billion in FY2023, helped by higher rates and First Republic, then to $177.6 billion in FY2024 and $182.4 billion in FY2025. Net income was $58.5 billion in FY2024 and $57.0 billion in FY2025. 2026 has been stronger: first-quarter net income was $16.5 billion on $50.5 billion of revenue, and second-quarter reported net income was $21.2 billion ($7.70 per share) on about $57 billion of revenue, including a $4.6 billion gain on Visa shares. Excluding significant items, 2Q26 net income was $16.9 billion with a 23% return on tangible common equity. Management raised full-year 2026 net interest income guidance to about $105.5 billion.

Business model and strategy
IBM
How it makes money
IBM makes money from four segments. Software ($29.96 billion in FY2025, about 44% of revenue) includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift, HashiCorp Terraform and Vault, Confluent data streaming (from March 2026), watsonx AI, automation, security, and mainframe transaction-processing software, sold mostly as subscriptions and recurring licenses.
Growth strategy
IBM does not try to beat AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud at selling public cloud capacity. It sells the software layer that runs across all of them and across on-premises data centers.
Competitive advantage
IBM's main advantage is how deeply it is built into the core systems of large regulated organizations. Banks, card networks, insurers, and governments run high-volume transaction processing on IBM Z, and moving those workloads is slow, risky, and expensive.
JPMorgan Chase
How it makes money
JPMorgan Chase makes money in two ways: net interest income (the spread between what it earns on loans and securities and what it pays on deposits and funding) and fee-based noninterest revenue from investment banking, trading, card and payment fees, and asset management. In FY2025 managed revenue of $185.6 billion came from three main segments.
Growth strategy
JPMorgan's growth plan is mostly organic. It keeps opening Chase branches in U.S. markets where it is underrepresented, expands its digital bank in Europe (Chase UK launched in 2021), adds bankers and advisers in commercial banking and wealth management, and invests heavily in technology and AI.
Competitive advantage
JPMorgan's edge is scale across businesses that reinforce each other. A deposit base of about $2.4 trillion (average, 2Q26) funds lending at low cost, the Chase brand feeds card and wealth relationships, and the Commercial & Investment Bank ranks at or near the top of global investment-banking fee tables.
