Founding Story

Ted Arison revolutionized the modern leisure travel sector by creating Carnival Cruise Line in 1972. When his initial ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, ran aground off Miami on its maiden voyage, Arison ingeniously rebranded the vessel as 'The Fun Ship,' prioritizing affordable onboard entertainment, lively nightspots, and accessible Caribbean ports. His focus on middle-class consumer vacationing transformed cruising into a mass-market phenomenon. Arison later expanded Carnival through new ship orders and took the firm public in 1987, before retiring to focus on philanthropy and founding the National YoungArts Foundation and Arison Arts Foundation.
