Background
Steven B. Dodge built his foundational expertise in the capital-intensive, infrastructure-heavy cable television industry. As the founder of American Cablesystems and later American Radio Systems, he mastered the complex economics of acquiring local broadcast assets, securing municipal permits, and heavily leveraging debt to fund rapid physical expansion. This specific operational background in scaling broadcast infrastructure made him uniquely qualified to recognize the massive value in leasing shared tower space to telecom operators.
Founding Story
Unlike legacy media or manufacturing companies, American Tower was not founded by a solitary inventor in a garage; it was a calculated, strategic spin-off orchestrated by a broadcasting conglomerate anticipating a structural shift in the telecommunications industry. The company was founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of American Radio Systems, a roll-up of local radio stations founded by Steve Dodge. In the mid-1990s, the United States was on the precipice of a cellular revolution. The federal government was auctioning off new spectrum, and dozens of new, heavily funded wireless carriers were rushing to build national networks. However, building out a network required physical infrastructure, specifically, thousands of tall steel towers to broadcast signals. Historically, telecommunications companies insisted on building and owning their own proprietary towers, viewing them as a competitive advantage. Steve Dodge, the CEO of American Radio Systems, recognized a financial inefficiency. His radio stations owned dozens of tall broadcast towers. He realized that rather than every new cellular company building their own redundant tower on the same hill, it would be infinitely more efficient for an independent, neutral third party to build one tower and lease space to multiple competing carriers. In 1995, he formally created American Tower Systems as a subsidiary to execute this exact vision. When CBS acquired American Radio Systems in 1998 for its radio assets, American Tower was spun off into an independent, publicly traded company. Under Dodge's leadership, the company acquired thousands of existing towers from carriers who needed cash, transforming the entire economic architecture of global telecommunications infrastructure.
