Samuel Reed holds a degree in Computer Science from Washington and Lee University. His extensive background involved building highly scalable, low-latency web applications and complex infrastructure systems for various technology startups. This deep, hands-on software engineering background was absolutely critical in allowing him to architect a highly robust, liquid matching engine that could survive the extreme volatility and massive data throughput of global cryptocurrency trading.

Samuel Reed is an American computer programmer and the co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of BitMEX. Partnering with Arthur Hayes and Ben Delo in 2014, Reed was tasked with the immense technical challenge of building a cryptocurrency trading engine capable of handling unprecedented, highly leveraged derivatives volume without crashing. Under his technical leadership, BitMEX's matching engine became legendary for processing billions of dollars in daily trades, powering the explosive growth of the perpetual swap. Like his co-founders, Reed's tenure ended in federal controversy when the US DOJ indicted the leadership team for blatant violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, leading to his arrest, guilty plea, and subsequent departure from the exchange.
