Background
The conceptual architects behind the Discover Card, operating within the massive Sears corporate structure, possessed an incredibly specialized, highly rigorous background in consumer retail credit and massive database management. This deeply entrenched background in safely managing millions of active Sears store charge cards provided the exact operational and risk-management blueprint required to successfully underwrite and launch a massive, universally accepted national credit network.
Founding Story
While historical records frequently misattribute the founding name to 'Ray Graham,' the true visionary behind the Discover Card's underlying concept was Ray Kennedy Sr., a highly brilliant credit manager at Sears. Working deep within the massive Sears financial apparatus, it was conceptualized that Sears could leverage its incredibly massive, pre-existing database of retail credit customers to launch a universally accepted credit card. Operating under the strategic mandate of CEO Edward R. Telling, the internal financial services team (including executives like Philip J. Purcell) successfully executed this massive internal corporate startup. The resulting Discover Card, launched in 1985, completely revolutionized the industry by pioneering the highly lucrative cash-back rewards system, eventually spinning off into the independent, publicly traded giant Discover Financial Services.
