Founding Story

Leo Goodwin Sr. (1886-1971) was an American insurance executive and visionary entrepreneur who revolutionized property and casualty insurance by inventing the direct-to-consumer distribution model. Originally an accountant and executive vice president at USAA in San Antonio, Texas, Goodwin realized in 1936 that traditional carriers wasted 25% to 40% of customer premiums on agent commissions and local offices. He co-founded GEICO in Fort Worth, Texas with $100,000 in capitalization ($25,000 personal savings), marketing policies directly to government and military employees via mail. Goodwin served as president until 1948 and chairman until 1958, cementing the low-cost operational ethos that defined GEICO.
