Founder Profile
James Monaghan

Background
James Monaghan held a highly stable, completely risk-averse background as a federal employee working as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. Unlike his brother, this deeply entrenched background in localized civil service and secure government employment completely fundamentally misaligned with the massive, high-risk, hyper-aggressive entrepreneurial mindset required to scale a national fast-food delivery franchise.
Founding Story
James Monaghan is famously known in corporate history as the original co-founder of Domino's Pizza, who incredibly traded away his half of the multi-billion-dollar empire for a used car. In 1960, James and his brother Tom purchased a small, struggling pizzeria called 'DomiNick's' in Ypsilanti, Michigan, for just $900. After roughly eight months of grueling labor, James, who already held a stable, full-time job as a local mail carrier, decided the immense risk and long hours were simply not worth it. In what is now considered one of the most astonishing corporate trades in history, he sold his 50% equity stake to his brother Tom in direct exchange for the business's only delivery vehicle: a 1959 Volkswagen Beetle. While Tom grew Domino's into a massive global behemoth and sold it for $1 billion in 1998, James quietly continued his career as a postman.
