Founding Story

James Laughlin (1806–1882) was an Irish-born American merchant, industrialist, and banker who served as the foundational organizing force and long-time president of the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company. Laughlin arrived in Pittsburgh in the 1830s, establishing a prosperous wholesale provisioning business supplying westbound pioneers and riverboat traders along the Ohio River. Recognizing that Western Pennsylvania's emerging iron and coal industries suffered from chronic credit shortages, Laughlin assembled a syndicate of local business leaders to charter Pittsburgh Trust on January 29, 1852. In 1853, Laughlin partnered with Benjamin Franklin Jones to finance the American Iron Works, which subsequently expanded into the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation (J&L Steel)—one of the largest steel producers in the world and the primary commercial client of Pittsburgh Trust. Laughlin guided the bank through its transition to First National Bank of Pittsburgh under National Charter #252 in 1863, embedding a conservative credit culture and industrial banking expertise that defined the institution for over a century.
