Founding Story
Hugh Cossart Baker Sr. was a prominent banker and mathematician in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1847, Baker had to travel to New York City by stagecoach to purchase a life insurance policy; recognizing that Canadians needed local financial protection, he founded Canada Life as Canada's very first domestic life insurer.
