Founding Story

George Jacob Mecherle (1877–1951) was an American farmer, entrepreneur, and insurance visionary who founded State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Bloomington, Illinois in 1922. Born on a farm in McLean County, Illinois, Mecherle spent the first 45 years of his life farming before working as an insurance agent. Recognizing that rural farmers represented a lower auto accident risk than urban motorists but were charged identical rates, Mecherle established an agricultural mutual insurer that sold policies at cost. He pioneered the six-month policy term and built an exclusive agency network based on local community trust. Mecherle served as State Farm's president and chairman until his death in 1951, by which time State Farm was already the largest automobile insurer in the United States.
