Background
General Mills possessed a massive, deeply entrenched background in consumer packaged goods, industrial food processing, and aggressive national marketing. This elite corporate background in managing highly complex supply chains and standardizing food production on a national scale provided the exact logistical framework required to transform a single, family-owned seafood restaurant into an absolutely massive, standardized casual dining empire.
Founding Story
Darden Restaurants traces its corporate origins directly to General Mills, the massive American food processing conglomerate. While the iconic Red Lobster brand was originally founded by entrepreneur Bill Darden in 1968, it was General Mills that recognized the incredible potential of scalable casual dining and acquired the single restaurant in 1970. Operating it as a specialized corporate division, General Mills aggressively injected massive amounts of capital, expanding Red Lobster nationwide and successfully launching the Olive Garden chain in 1982. By 1995, the restaurant division had become so astronomically large and operationally distinct from the core packaged-foods business that General Mills decided to completely spin it off into an independent, publicly traded entity, naming it Darden Restaurants in honor of the original founder.
