Background
Gautam Adani was born into a middle-class Jain family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Demonstrating an early entrepreneurial streak, he dropped out of Gujarat University in his second year of a commerce degree and moved to Mumbai. There, he worked as a diamond sorter at Mahindra Brothers, quickly learning the intricacies of global trade and commodity markets before returning to Gujarat to manage his brother's plastics manufacturing operation, which gave him his first taste of global supply chain logistics.
Founding Story
Gautam Adani founded Adani Exports (now Adani Enterprises) in 1988, initially focusing on agricultural and power commodities. Recognizing the large infrastructural deficit in India's rapidly growing economy, Adani pivoted from trading to asset creation. In 1995, he secured the rights to manage the Mundra Port in Gujarat, transforming it into India's largest private commercial port. Over the next three decades, he systematically expanded the Adani Group into a strong, vertically integrated conglomerate dominating India's infrastructure sector. His aggressive, debt-fueled expansion strategy allowed the group to capture market leadership in thermal power generation, green energy (Adani Green), airport management, and data centers. Despite facing intense scrutiny over corporate governance and debt levels, notably from short-sellers, Adani's vision has fundamentally reshaped India's physical infrastructure landscape, making him one of the wealthiest and most influential industrialists in Asia.
