Daniel Best forged his background through grueling physical labor in mining, lumber, and farming across the Pacific Northwest and California during the mid-19th century. This extremely tough, hands-on operational background in rugged frontier environments gave him firsthand knowledge of the severe mechanical limitations of the era, driving his lifelong obsession with inventing heavy-duty, labor-saving agricultural machinery.

Daniel Best was a highly prolific American inventor, entrepreneur, and a foundational figure in the history of agricultural machinery and the eventual formation of Caterpillar. Moving west in 1859, Best spent years working in harsh conditions before losing three fingers in a sawmill accident—an event that shifted his focus to mechanical invention. He went on to hold over 40 patents, famously inventing portable grain cleaners and highly efficient combine harvesters. Realizing that horses could not efficiently pull his massive harvesters, he pioneered the manufacturing of immense steam traction engines. His company, Best Manufacturing, became a dominant force in California agriculture, eventually being acquired by Holt Manufacturing, paving the way for the historic 1925 merger that created the Caterpillar Tractor Company.
