Background
Changpeng Zhao, universally known as CZ, developed a deep understanding of financial trading systems long before discovering cryptocurrency. Born in Jiangsu, China, his family emigrated to Canada where he studied computer science at McGill University. He began his career developing order-matching software for the Tokyo Stock Exchange and later developed futures trading software at Bloomberg Tradebook. This unique blend of high-frequency trading infrastructure and computer science gave him the exact technical skillset required to build a highly strong, liquid cryptocurrency exchange.
Founding Story
Changpeng Zhao founded Binance in 2017 following a highly successful $15 million Initial Coin Offering (ICO). Drawing on his background in traditional high-frequency trading, CZ architected Binance's matching engine to handle large volumes, vastly outperforming existing sluggish crypto exchanges. Under his aggressive leadership, Binance grew to become the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume in under 180 days. His philosophy of rapid execution and global expansion, often operating in a decentralized, borderless manner, allowed the company to dominate the crypto market. He aggressively built an expansive ecosystem, launching the Binance Smart Chain, acquiring CoinMarketCap, and rolling out a suite of decentralized finance products. However, his borderless approach eventually attracted severe regulatory scrutiny globally, culminating in a historic 2023 settlement with the US DOJ where CZ stepped down as CEO to resolve anti-money laundering charges.
