Founding Story

Benjamin Franklin Jones (1824–1903), widely known as B. F. Jones, was an American industrial pioneer, steel magnate, and foundational charter investor in the Pittsburgh Trust and Savings Company. Starting his career as a shipping clerk on the Pennsylvania Canal, Jones demonstrated an extraordinary aptitude for transportation logistics and industrial organization. In 1851, Jones acquired a financial interest in an iron foundry on the Monongahela River, shortly thereafter bringing in James Laughlin as his financial and banking partner. Jones was an active board director and foundational capital subscriber of Pittsburgh Trust and Savings, utilizing the bank to facilitate international trade, industrial plant modernization, and raw material procurement. Jones later served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1884 and remained a dominant figure in shaping Pittsburgh's industrial and financial infrastructure throughout the Gilded Age.
