Background
Alfred Escher belonged to the 'Escher vom Glas' family, one of the most distinguished, wealthy, and politically influential dynasties in Zurich. He possessed an elite background in law and political science from the University of Zurich. This deeply ingrained background in aristocratic Swiss politics, combined with his unparalleled network of wealthy industrialists and his position in the Swiss National Council, gave him the massive political and financial leverage required to successfully establish Credit Suisse.
Founding Story
Alfred Escher was an incredibly powerful, visionary Swiss politician and business magnate who single-handedly engineered the modernization of the Swiss economy by founding Credit Suisse. In the mid-19th century, Switzerland desperately needed a massive, unified railway system to connect with industrializing Europe, but it completely lacked the domestic capital required to fund it. Recognizing that relying on foreign banks would compromise Swiss sovereignty, Escher founded the 'Schweizerische Kreditanstalt' (Credit Suisse) in 1856. The bank was an immediate, explosive success, raising astronomical amounts of capital that successfully financed the legendary Gotthard Railway and transformed Switzerland into a wealthy, highly connected modern state. Escher served as the Chairman of the Board until 1877, cementing his legacy as the absolute architect of the modern Swiss financial system.
