Lucius Smith Lowe

Lucius Smith Lowe was a North Carolina merchant who opened a general merchandise store in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1921. His store served the practical needs of a farming and industrial community in the Blue Ridge Appalachian foothills, selling hardware, seed, feed, and domestic goods in the tradition of the American general store. L.S. Lowe died in 1940, leaving the business to his children, and the enterprise was reconstituted as a dedicated hardware store bearing his name in 1946, the year conventionally cited as Lowe's official founding date.

Lucius Smith Lowe founded the business that would eventually become one of the largest retailers in the United States, though he did not live to see his family name become a national brand. Lowe operated a general merchandise store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, from 1921 until his death in 1940, serving the working families of Wilkes County with hardware, agricultural supplies, and basic domestic goods.
